Triacetin (Glyceryl Triacetate)

Triacetin, with the chemical formula C9H14O6 and CAS registry number 102-76-1, is a colorless, odorless liquid commonly used as a food additive, plasticizer, and solvent. Also known as glyceryl triacetate or glycerin triacetate. Triacetin can be prepared by heating glycerin with acetic anhydride alone or in the presence of finely divided potassium hydrogen sulfate. It can also be prepared by the reaction of oxygen with a liquid-phase mixture of allyl acetate and acetic acid using a bromide salt as a catalyst.

Triacetin is notable for its ability to dissolve a wide range of organic compounds and its low volatility, making it useful in various industrial applications. This compound is often employed in the production of flavorings, perfumes, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics due to its stable nature and compatibility with other substances. Triacetin is considered safe for consumption and is approved by regulatory bodies such as the FDA and the European Food Safety Authority.
