Melamine
Melamine is a colourless crystalline substance belonging to the family of heterocyclic organic compounds, which are used principally as a starting material for the manufacture of synthetic resins. Melamine is rich in nitrogen, a property that is similar to protein.
Properties of Melamine
As a compound, melamine exhibits several distinct characteristics that make it especially useful. It is a white crystalline powder, stable at room temperature, with a slightly sweet taste. However, its most defining features relate to its exceptional stability and fire resistance.

Applications of Melamine
Thanks to its unique characteristics, melamine has found a place in numerous applications. The majority of melamine is used in the production of melamine-formaldehyde resins. These are durable thermosetting plastics used in high-pressure decorative laminates such as Formica, melamine dinnerware, laminate flooring, and dry erase boards.
In the textile industry, melamine is employed as a flame retardant. It is also used in the manufacture of certain pesticides and fertilizers due to its high nitrogen content. In addition, melamine is an important component in certain pigments, adhesives, and coatings.
